IKEA in Ottawa Ontario – Store Hours, History, News & More

Unless you live on an island, you have more than likely heard of the Swedish founded company, IKEA, who designs and sells furniture that you can easily assemble yourself in the comfort of your very own home.  On top of that, IKEA also offers home products and kitchen appliances, as well as just about every other type of good that you can think of that you would want to have in your home. In fact, IKEA has actually become so popular, that is has been the entire world’s biggest supplier of furniture since back in 2008.

Originally being founded in Sweden, in the year 1943 by a carpenter named Ingvar Kamprad, who was only 17 years old at the time, Kamprad would eventually become wealthy enough to be listed in Forbes magazine back in 2015, as one of the top ten richest people in the entire world, having a worth of over $40 billion dollars.  And in just in case you were wondering how Kamprad was able to come up with the name IKEA, it is actually an acronym that is a combination of his initials, the farm that he grew up on (Elmtaryd, and his hometown in the south of Sweden, Smaland. When you add these elements together, you have the name of his store, IKEA.

Known mainly for the modernist designs and different varieties of furniture and appliances, IKEAS’s interior design work is also known to be both stylish and eco-friendly as well.  On top of that, everything that IKEA offers is extremely simple and easy to get setup. On top of bringing the world amazing furniture and other home goods, IKEA is also popular for its attention to the regards of cost control, continuous product development, and even operational details.  These are all great corporate attributes that have allowed IKEA to pass their savings onto their customers, actually being able to drop the prices of their products by an average of about 3% over the past decade, which has been a period of serious global expansion.

While the corporate structure of IKEA is quite complex, the European Parliament has alleged that IKEA has set itself up in this particular corporate fashion, as to avoid paying over 1 billion Euros in taxes during the years of 2009 through 2014.  Whether or not that is true, what everybody does know, is that IKEA is actually run by several different foundations that are located in Liechtenstein and the Netherlands.

As of June of 2019, there are over 420 IKEA stores that are operating in over 50 countries.  IKEA is so popular, that in the entire fiscal year of 2018, more than $44.6 billion dollars (38.8 billion Euros) of IKEA goods were purchased.  While this may sound like an absurd number of products being sold, you must keep in mind that the IKEA website alone has over 12,000 different products and is probably going to be the best representation of everything that IKEA stores actually have to offer.  Just to help paint the picture for you, the IKEA website had over 2.1 billion different visitors between September of 2015, and August of 2016. That means that in only one year, there were over 2.1 billion visitors to IKEA’s website. IKEA has gotten so popular, that it is actually accredited for using roughly 1% of the entire world’s commercial wood product consumption, meaning that IKEA is just about the largest user of wood when it comes to the retail sector.

While everyone knows of IKEA stores and their website, what most people don’t know about IKEA, is that it actually wasn’t always IKEA.  In fact, most of the original factories and stores were actually owned by a company known as INGKA, which is a holding company that is controlled by the Stichting INGKA Foundation.  This particular foundation is actually one of the top 40 wealthiest foundations in the entire world.

Moving forwards, IKEA is actually partnering with different local companies in an effort to help reduce their production of greenhouse gases when it comes to transporting their products.  In fact, IKEA has even been accused of being something that most companies will never be able to claim, that being one of the most environmentally sound and friendly companies on the globe.

History of IKEA

The original founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, founded IKEA back in 1943, originally being a mail order sales type of business.  They would move forward and start selling furniture about 5 years later. The actual first Mobel-IKEA store would be opened in the town of Almhult, which is located in Smaland, back in 1958 (which Mobel actually means furniture in the Swedish language).  As the company gained popularity, more stores would eventually be opened in other surrounding countries. The first country outside of Sweden to have an IKEA store, would be Norway in 1963, followed by Denmark in 1969. The mega-furniture store would eventually spread to several other parts throughout Europe during the 1970s, having its very first store outside of Scandinavia, opening in Switzerland in 1973.  This would then be followed by another store opening in West Germany a year later in 1974.

Experiencing a very high level of success, some of the company’s executives would accidently open a store that would be located in Konstanz in the year 1973, as opposed to Koblenz, which is where the store was supposed to be opened.  Within the next several years, other stores would be opened across the world, featuring Japan in 1974, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia in 1975, and then Singapore in 1978. IKEA would continue its world domination over the following years, launching and opening stores in several different countries, some of which included Spain and France in 1981, Belgium in 1984, the United States in 1985, the United Kingdom in 1987, and Italy in 1989.  From there, IKEA would continue to expand and grow the number of stores it held in countries all over the world, some of which would have multiple stores within the same country.

Unfortunately, the original founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, would die on January 27, 2018.  While Kamprad may have died, his legacy will live on for many years to come.
