Ottawa Craigslist Classifieds – Find & Sell Items (www.Craigslist.ca Ottawa)
Today we’re going to talk about a certain little website that has been around for an extremely long time, and even in Ottawa where it’s not the primary search, this website is still utilized just as frequently as other popular sites like Kijiji (one of Canada’s most widely used ones out there. In this article we’re going to talk a little bit about just what makes Craigslist tick, and how it’s not only utilized in the U.S., but also with Canadian fans of the famous site. Let’s just See what Ottawa’s Craigslist is all about, shall we?
What is Craigslist Ottawa?
Craigslist Ottawa is a classified site that originated in the U.S. (primarily San Francisco). It’s one of the most visited websites in the entire world and offers local classified services where you can post literally anything, from jobs, real estate, sell items, and even offer services (professional or non-professional) and even personal ads. They’ve even got a forum on their site which allows people to post and discuss literally anything that you can think of.
How Ottawa Craigslist Came to Be
The founder Craig Newmark wanted to make something different when it came to local events. And even though it started out as a simple event list posting service, there were many users who started trying to get jobs filled and even more that began posting about things that weren’t even related to personal events. While it shocked the founder, the site was still pretty much not even moderated. Many users started asking for the site to have more lists in order to show, and therefore, they started posting more categories that people could post and view in. Unfortunately, the software that was used for the technology ran into some snags, so they had some downtime and an upgrade in 1005. Finally, because of the local community starting to ask for him to put it on the worldwide web, so in 1996 Newmark registered the domain that we know of today and it has stuck ever since.
The founder Jim Buckmaster decided to make waves by trying to allow users to connect with people in other areas too. In 2000, he went ahead and decided to join the development side of the project by taking over as the lead programmer. Buckmaster is actually the one that helped to integrate the way that the site has a multi-city integration which made it as popularly viewed today. Not only that, but he also included programming the search engine, forums, and even the flagging and reporting system, the automatic posting feature, as well as the basic homepage design. Later on in 2000, he got bumped up from CTO to CEO. By the year 2000 they continued to grow into numerous pages and in 2004 they started charging money as they were an official for-profit organization (since 1999), for employers in the New York area and the Los Angeles, CA pages that were looking to hire people from the site. They wanted to make sure that people could still post “free” ads, so they added the section that we know of as “Gigs”.
How does Craigslist Actually Work?
Craigslist doesn’t require membership, which is unlike many other classified sites out there. You have an extensive selection of categories and subcategories to choose from due to their tagging feature. Not only that, but you can also choose to browse the forums as well.
In Ottawa, What Can You Find?
You can find numerous main categories when it comes to Craigslist posts in Ottawa. Sure, you can look at the discussion forums, and see the local events, but you can also find service advertisements (people posting services) as well as real estate, jobs, for sale, and regular community posts (such as bands looking to audition other musicians). The page itself can cover numerous cities, from Alberta, Manitoba (Winnipeg mainly), New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, the Yukon Territory, and yes, even numerous places in the Ontario district, with Ottawa, Hull, and Gatineau being one of the primary places where posts reside.
With all of these things, you can connect with groups, look into commercial and residential housing, find a job in literally just about any field, and find numerous items for sale, from antiques, all the way to tickets, video games, and even wanted ads (for finding collectors).
In the past, you could post personal ads, but because Congress in the US posted the Sex Trafficking Bill which meant that places like Craigslist founder and owner could had faced actual litigation charges. This was passed for good reason however, as trafficking began to increase and many predators used these websites to find their targeted victims and lure them in. Therefore, in order to join the forces of the US government in the fight against trafficking, Craig himself decided it was best to take down that area because it not only posed an extreme risk of trafficking with its personals section.
How Much Traffic Does Craigslist Generate?
Believe it or not, Craigslist, despite their horrible and bland-looking design, actually traffics about 20 billion page views on a monthly average, and they rank approximately in the lower 70’s as the most popular sites in the entire world. Not only that, but loyal visitors check back almost as frequently as frantic eBay bidders to see what’s new. They flag posts a lot so they can draw attention to certain posts and the users are often in charge of flagging the posts that are spam as such. Because of the ease of use, it is easy to see why people love visiting it as well. No other site is completely this self-explanatory.
How Does Craigslist Fair Compared to Other Sites?
In Ottawa and other Canadian provinces have classifieds very similar to Craigslist. One such service was the eBay-founded website known in Canada as Kijiji, which means “village” in Swahili. That being said, however, the sites are completely different. While you can post ads on both websites, Kijiji requires you to be a member, something Craigslist itself doesn’t make you actually do. Also, when it comes to the site’s ability for users to flag posts as inappropriate, Craigslist visitors have the liberty to do so themselves without any requirements or warnings. This is both a plus and a negative.
Unfortunately, because Craigslist doesn’t require membership like Kijiji and others that require membership, it has been getting more and more reports of insecure features and has been filling up more and more with what is known as data miners which is something that you need to beware of at all times when browsing the site. All they have to do is get your e-mail and then if you respond, they can scam you from all sorts of things, even when it comes to job posts. As a matter of fact, most other sites are more secure, because they require you to sign up and there are less scammers and spammers that have been associated with those sites, putting a lot of shame to Craigslist in Ottawa. Nevertheless, it’s still a very powerful website and some employers that are truly legit use it over others because they don’t have to go through all of the other issues that they face posting on regular job boards like Monster, Indeed, and others.
What About Auctioning?
While Craigslist doesn’t have the ability to actually allow you to “auction” items, many items that you find for sale may be tagged with “OBO” which means “or best offer”. When you post an item like this, it gives you time to let people “bid” per say on an item you’re selling, so you’ll get no less than the minimum amount of money from your “willingness to accept” if you’re a seller.
How to Sell on Craigslist
While you can’t post all of the same things you used to be able to on Craigslist, you can post just about anything, which makes it one of the best sites around. Fortunately, they’ve also integrated the option recently to also provide location to the mix so you can show your general location when it comes to the posts to provide an extra bit of security to the mix, by integrating with Google Maps, one of the world’s leading search engines.
Craigslist Ottawa Conclusion
It’s no wonder why with the nearly complete freedom of speech and the ability to actually have the freedom of the internet at your fingertips, why Craigslist has been so successful. It’s been around for years and was one of the first forms of “dating sites” having not only sparked issues, but also positive connections from community members in the past. Not only that, but it’s become one of the most successful unofficial job posting boards out there, and while they’ve had their shares of ups and downs, they continue to revel in their success. If you asked the founder of Craigslist, he would happily tell you that he had no idea that what he created years ago as just a local event poster board and e-mailing list would ever become such a big deal to not only people in the U.S. and Canada but also worldwide.
