What is Kijiji Ottawa Gatineau?

Kijiji Ottawa – Kijiji.ca Online Classifieds to Buy & Sell

Kijiji is a site that has a Swahili name meaning the word village. It’s one of many classified advertising agencies, and it’s similar in terms like a combined Facebook Marketplace mixed with Craigslist. You can find all sorts of things on there, from appliances to employment and more. It offers numerous similar things as one of their major competitors known throughout the world as Craigslist, and the only difference is that is gets a lot less traffic when it comes to countries like the United States. It does feature some more detailed sections than Craigslist though, and things aren’t displayed in text and basic HTML like they are with Craigslist. In Canada, it’s actually the most popular online classified service compared to any other. In Gatineau for example, it draws about three to four times more traffic than even Craigslist, making it a success everywhere except in the United States. Let’s get into more detail, shall we?

How Was Kijiji Started?

Back in 2005, eBay launched Kijiji as a startup project available inside of eBay itself, when a bunch of amateur employees decided to make something new. They acquired a popular British version of Craigslist called Gumtree which operates all over the world. However only a month later, they also were able to purchase OpusForum.org, which was another classified site in Germany. Eventually, they rebranded the India form of their site later in 2008 to Quikr, and then in 2009, they changed its name in Germany to eBay Kleinanzeigen. After numerous prospects, they got rid of their personal section in the U.S. and Canada, and in 2010 eBay jumped on the ball itself in order to try and take Kijiji away from them by offering their own classifieds section in the United States. That being said, they continued to get into numerous listing partnerships until eventually, they started to add messaging options, registration that is mandatory and changing their logos to their very own branding. Eventually, they released their brand new automobile section in 2018 and now they’re a fully-fledged classified site for “literally everything”.

Legalities that Ensued

Unfortunately, Kijiji’s owner, eBay also had shareholdings in Craigslist. Approximately 3 years after Kijiji launched, the founders proceeded in a lawsuit with Craigslist because they were stating that Craigslist was trying to weaken eBay’s investment. Unfortunately, Craigslist saw that Kijiji had used some similar functions as they did, so they countersued, stating that eBay stole trade secrets and didn’t use their own ideas when it came to promoting their own service. Unfortunately for Kijiji, this led to eBay losing their share of stake in Craigslist, which equaled approximately a little over 28 percent in the company itself. The entire process took about 7 years, and now they are completely two separate entities. As a matter of fact, Craigslist is now on the hit list by Kijiji, being one of the top competitors and rivals of the company itself.

Does Kijiji Look Like Craigslist?

Absolutely not. It’s actually a strange thing that the United States would prefer Craigslist, but it’s a prime example of people wanting to choose what they’re used to. Craigslist still has the same old bland site that looks like it hasn’t been updated in years, when in fact there are numerous things they’ve done, but it’s all on the backend. Kijiji, however, has the look and feel similar to that of Craigslist, and shows featured ads on their site in not only timed order but also by offering a more graphical interface in a “list” view like eBay uses.

Literally, all of the ads are now in Canada, and they use it for literally everything. Another thing is that when you go to their homepage offers a graphical selection of categories, making it much flashier than Craigslist. Not only that, but their terms of posting and services is a lot more family-friendly than Craigslist. As a matter of fact, they will ban anyone who posts a “personals” ad, or anything that’s not family-safe. That being said, it looks like they’re actually altogether a more family-friendly site as well, which is a huge plus and might help Kijiji make its way to branch out elsewhere in the future, but they’re unsure about it with all of the trials and tribulations they’ve had throughout the first 10 years of operation.

How Do You Post on the Site?

First, unlike Craigslist, you have to become a member in order to post advertisements and contact anyone on the site. With Craigslist, you can literally view ads and search for just about anything, while you can’t do so with Kijiji. While this may seem like a downfall to some, it’s actually a great way to increase productivity, security, and overall privacy so people aren’t bombarded with quite so many spammers and scammers. When it comes to memberships, you can post on their website, however, in order to get the most out of it, there are fees that you can pay in order to increase visibility in whatever service, job, or advertisement or classified you’re posting.  If you’re not a business though, you may just want to post and upload photos for your ad under a basic membership, as they can cost up to about a hundred and fourteen dollars for the maximum visibility account, and that’s per month.

Conclusion

Kijiji Ottawa is definitely not going anywhere, and it’s getting better constantly. They’re continuously adding more posts and you can literally find everything that you can find on other competitors, but with the benefit of being completely family-friendly and more kid-safe, it’s no wonder why people in Canada choose sites like it over Craigslist and other insecure options. By offering a completely free advertising and posting solution, it’s still better to many people than Craigslist that charges a fee to post most ads when it comes to anything that can benefit you financially. If you’re in Canada and want to see what’s available near you (especially in Gatineau, where they have over 349,000 classifieds in various categories), you can definitely have high chances of finding what you’re looking for on the site, even real estate!
