The venture capital train keeps picking up steam, with the third announcement this month of a major VC deal involving an Ottawa-based company.

Spotwave Wireless has landed a US$10 million (CDN $11,578,000) expansion round led by the company's existing investors and Motorola Ventures, the VC arm of Motorola Inc. The existing investors include Newbury Ventures, VenGrowth Private Equity Partners, Primaxis Technology Ventures, Skypoint Capital, VentureLink Fund, The GrowthWorks Canadian Fund, and RBQ Limited. Spotwave says management and staff also participated actively in the round.

"The funding will extend Spotwave's marketing and distribution efforts and aid in speeding our expansion into new global markets. Additionally, this funding will enable us to develop new products that will be the catalysts for the convergence of wireless and multimedia in the home," says Spotwave CEO Bill Carlin.

Spotwave manufactures a series of products that ensure uniform indoor wireless coverage by eliminating so-called "dead spots" within buildings.

"Spotwave's leadership in the growing in-building wireless segment complements Motorola's Seamless Mobility strategy and we are pleased to add Spotwave to our investment portfolio," Warren Holtsberg, Motorola's corporate vice president of equity investments, said in a statement.

The explosive growth of wireless devices such as PDA's, laptop computers and cell phones is causing businesses to invest to ensure efficient communications within their premises. Coverage has now become a strategic issue for companies deploying wireless applications and for telecommunications carriers looking to retain customers and win new data service business.
