APPRENTICE UPDATE - Week Five
By Ellen Tsaprailis, Ottawa Business Journal Staff

Arrogant Michael finally got the boot this week as the Street Smarts team managed to once again outdo the Book Smarts.

By a margin of only $72.50, Net Worth beat Magna and the over-educated interviewees are starting to sweat with real concern over their chances at impressing The Donald and his cronies.

The Donald actually laid low on peddling his friends' products this week and allowed the teams to come up with their own business out of a 28-foot trailer and a budget of $5,000.

Both teams came up with fairly good ideas. Magna decided to run a day spa out of their trailer while Net Worth managed to track down a reputable casting director and get budding actors to come in and spend five minutes showcasing their talent.

For Magna, Michael continued to be a dead weight on this task. He was an unbelievable whiner and almost every comment he has made since being on the show has portrayed him as thinking he was too good to go through the interview process. For this particular task, not only did he want to call the trailer "Massage a Go Go" which his team smartly shot down quickly, he could not stop complaining that it was hard for a man to hand out flyers asking people to come in for a massage or beauty service. What was up with that? Every spa I've ever gone to has a number of men working and many men go to spas to enjoy the services and relaxing atmosphere. Even The Donald's sidekick George thought Michael was being ridiculous in not trying harder to hand out flyers and talk people into signing up for a massage or manicure.

The reward for Net Worth was the chance to meet Miss Universe and Miss U.S.A. but I don't think the Street Smarts team was as impressed with the beauty pageant winners as they were with the fact that they were able to buy $20,000 worth of pearls from renowned pearl shop Mikimoto.

In the boardroom, Magna's project manager Bren picked Michael and Stephanie to come back with him to be fired. Even though Bren was on Stephanie's case that she had been a negative influence on the team, Michael kept interrupting and The Donald was unimpressed with Michael's stupidity at staying quiet and saving himself so he fired him.

In his typical arrogant fashion, Michael handed The Donald his business card before leaving saying he had the biggest parking lot in the city and that he wanted The Donald to call him. Considering Michael was approved to be on the show, I'm sure The Donald's people had all the contact information they needed on Michael if The Donald was interested in keeping in touch.

In his taxicab ride home, Michael continued complaining, feeling his teammates were backstabbers while pretending to be friends. Whatever, Michael. Their task is not to see you win a spot in one of The Donald's companies. Good riddance to that chump.

Do you agree that Michael should have been fired? Check out our discussion board to add your comments:
