Ottawa-based EION Wireless has introduced a new family of WiMAX products, and has already deployed the system in Libya and Kyrgyzstan.

The new products are an evolution of technology EION purchased from Wi-LAN in April of this year.

The product family includes a range of WiMAX base and subscriber stations that operate in the 3.3, 3.5 and 3.6 GHz bands. They can run network applications such as VoIP, virtual private networks, and Internet access.

Emerging market countries are proving to be fertile ground for WiMAX, as they leapfrog copper cable and fibre optic networks in favour of wireless, says EION CEO Kalai Kalaichelvan.

WiMAX is also many times cheaper than more traditional systems.

A typical WiMAX base station can cover an area 40 to 60 kilometers in diameter.

The Libyan expansion includes a series of both base and subscriber stations. Each base station in the network has the capacity to provide service to over 2000 remote users.

A second major deployment in Kyrgyzstan provides carrier-class delivery of voice, data and video signals.

EION Wireless products are the backbone of many large-scale deployments in wireless data, voice and video surveillance applications in the Middle East & Africa, ranging from licensed service providers to banking and to video surveillance application.
