The Business and Career Services section of the Ottawa Public Library is marking Small Business Week with a lineup of guest speakers who will offer advice on topics such as obtaining financing, taxation issues and doing business with the federal government.

This is the first the library is hosting the speaker series and is part of its effort to reach out more to the business community, says librarian Jill Hawken.

"This is just the beginning," she says, adding the library is planning networking breakfasts and would like to partner with the Entrepreneurship Centre to offer evening workshops on, for example, how to register a business name.

The sessions are also a chance for the library to highlight the resources it offers small business owners. For example, entrepreneurs can consult one-on-one with a business librarian on doing market research in the library's extensive database collections.

All session take place in the auditorium of the main library branch at noon. Ms. Hawken says she expects to upload podcasts of the presentations to the library's website for those unable to attend the midday sessions.
