Ottawa-based Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) announced Wednesday that Intel Corp. is asking for a declaratory judgment on 18 Wi-LAN patents in the United States.
Wi-LAN said Intel has filed a claim in California claiming the patents are invalid, but added that no claim has been served on Wi-LAN as of yet.
The Ottawa company previously filed patent infringement litigation against 22 companies on Oct. 31, 2007, including Intel. But Wi-LAN said it doesn't believe this new suit is related to those patents.
In August, Wi-LAN settled a claim under confidential terms with Research in Motion Ltd., giving RIM a licence to use some of Wi-LAN's wireless technology patents.
