Three Ottawa-based projects are among the beneficiaries of another new funding announcement from the provincial government, this time in support of digital media research.

The Ontario government is investing $207,263 in several University of Ottawa research projects through the Ontario Research Fund, as part of a recent spending push that includes last week's announcement of $457,331 for the local clean-tech sector.

The local researchers receiving the funding are:

  • Wotjek Michalowski, Kenneth Farion, Stan Matwin, $103,900, who will be working on a point-of-care 'decision support system' that will automatically provide only the most relevant clinical information to emergency physicians. The system will be prototyped at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario;

  • Teresa Scassa, $64,283, who will be looking at creating a systematic approach to information law, including laws related to privacy, copyright, and access to information.

  • Morad Benyoucef, $39,080, who will research the design, development, deployment and usability of e-marketplaces for safe, fair and transparent trade.

"Today's investment is an important part of our government's $3-billion Ontario Innovation Agenda – our plan to make innovation the driving force of the provincial economy," said Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation John Wilkinson in a statement. "We are committed to help our top researchers turn their best ideas into new products and services that will lead to good-paying jobs right here in Ontario."

The funding announcements are part of a province-wide investment of $3.5 million in 34 digital media research projects.
