Nortel Networks Corp. (TSX:NT) made two moves into the 3-D field Thursday with its acquisition of DiamondWare Ltd. and an announcement that the telecom giant will develop an audiovisual tool to facilitate business collaboration.
The DiamondWare software deal, worth up to US$10 million, is expected to enhance Nortel's voice conferencing and voice-over-Internet-protocol solutions for its large clients. DiamondWare develops 3-D positional voice software for gamers as well as the United States military.
Just prior to the announcement, Nortel unveiled a video demonstration of 'Project Chainsaw' web.alive.
The virtual-world software application allows clients to put their virtual selves, or avatars, in an online environment for simulated face-to-face communication.
