Calian Technologies Ltd. has won an $11.7-million contract with a Kentucky manufacturer of military equipment.

The Kanata company, which was founded by Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien, said its systems engineering division (SED) had been chosen by Florence, Ky.-based DRS Sustainment Systems to manufacture 227 aerial head assemblies (AHAs) and associated electronics.

The AHAs will be used in DRS's Manportable Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar (MSTAR) systems, which are used for perimeter security and surveillance. Calian has been working with DRS since 2006 to produce the radar system parts.

"We are very pleased to have once again been selected by DRS to manufacture the AHAs for the new radar systems," the company's statement read. "We have been working extensively with DRS over the past year to optimize the design of the AHA to make it more cost-effective. The award of this contract demonstrates the success of those efforts."

Calian said it will start programmatic tasks immediately, with deliveries scheduled to take place through to April 2009.
