Wi-LAN Inc. has settled one of its patent litigation cases and has launched new lawsuits against three companies, including electronics bigwigs Motorola and Research in Motion.

The Ottawa-based company said it has initiated litigation against Motorola Inc., Research in Motion Corp., Research in Motion Ltd. and Alameda, Calif.'s UTStarCom Inc. for allegedly infringing and continuing to infringe upon two of Wi-LAN's U.S. wireless patents.

Wi-LAN has launched the lawsuits in the U.S. district court for the eastern district of Texas, Marshall Division, and claims that the companies are infringing upon its RE37,802 and 5,282,222 patents by making and/or selling products "including mobile handheld devices and other equipment."

Wi-LAN will be represented in this action by U.S. law firm McKool Smith, which also worked with the company in its litigation launched in November against 22 companies.

The company also announced that one of those 22 companies, Marvell Semiconductor Inc., has settled with Wi-LAN in the U.S. District Court for the northern district of California.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
