OCRI honours tech excellence

Local tech sector darling Cognos Inc. was among the winners Thursday night at OCRI's eighth annual awards dinner.

The business intelligence software maker was honoured for enhancing Ottawa's international profile and technological competitiveness.

Five individuals were also recognized for their contributions to Ottawa's tech sector.

Gerard Lynch, CEO of Photonics Research Ontario, was presented with the Des Cunningham Award for promoting Ottawa as a centre for photonics research and business.

Emad Gad, a Carleton PhD student, earned researcher of the year for his work on analog circuit simulation, a technology for use in cellular handsets.

Ottawa University's Dr. Paul Lem and Jamie Spiegelman were named student entrepreneurs of the year, co-founders. The pair have developed a technology for diagnosing infectious diseases that they have taken to the commercial market.

Lastly, Jim Orban, general manager of the Ottawa Citizen, was named civic entrepreneur of the year.
