Formerly Ottawa-based Impath Networks Corp., a developer of video surveillance solutions, has decided to move its head office to Halifax.
The province of Nova Scotia through Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI), a business development agency will invest $2 million in the company, sources said, along with $1 million from the GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund.
When contacted by OBJ, CEO Carlo Shimoon said the move will not result in immediate Ottawa-area job cuts. "We may even grow (the Ottawa office) slightly," he said. "But right now our focus is opening a new location in Halifax, and developing an R&D team and a business development team" in that city, he added.
"The numbers may (in the future) decrease here in Ottawa, but we have no plans to be laying off any time soon."
The company, which employs 16 staff in Ottawa, is a provider of video surveillance solutions for transportation systems, bridges and tunnels, government and military facilities, airports and seaports, city centres, border crossings, and correctional facilities.
Though originally from Ottawa, Shimoon said he's lived in Halifax for the past eight years, adding that provincial and Atlantic-area VC funding received by the company was a major factor in the move. "We agreed that if we could raise the money from Atlantic Canada, we'd be ok with relocating the head office to Atlantic Canada," he said.
