Wi-LAN has signed up Taiwan's ASUSTeK Compter Inc. for a wireless licensing deal.
The Ottawa-based patent licensing company said ASUS had signed a five-year licence agreement relating to Wi-LAN's Wi-Fi patents, which provides for the payment of a running royalty on branded ASUS notebook PCs, access points and other wireless products sold in North America. The deal also includes a payment in respect of past sales.
"We are extremely pleased that we were able to negotiate this licence agreement with ASUS, the seventh-largest and fastest-growing notebook computer vendor in the world," stated Bill Middleton, Wi-LAN's senior vice-president of licensing and general counsel. "With ASUS's innovative products like the Eee PC and aggressive growth plans, this licence agreement could have significant future potential for Wi-LAN."
Wi-LAN noted that ASUS generated revenues of US$6.9 billion in 2007, and cited a DisplaySearch LLC report which said ASUS had the largest increase in global notebook shipments of all major vendors in 2007.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
