Atreus Systems has been acquired by Massachusetts-based Sonus Networks.
The Ottawa-based supplier of Internet-protocol (IP)-based voice and advanced IP service provisioning software said Sonus had completed the Atreus acquisition for an undisclosed sum.
Sonus, which has worked with Atreus for five years, makes IP communications infrastructure.
"With Atreus joining Sonus Networks, customers will have access to the highest level of IP integration expertise, and our technology will be available through a global organization to meet the growing demand for IP migrations and the necessary back-office integration to deliver the multiplay services required by business and home subscribers alike," said Atreus CEO Andrea Baptiste in a statement.
Sonus said it was buying Atreus to take advantage of its expertise in the integration of operating support systems and the provision of IP services for fixed-line and mobile operators' access networks, including network management systems, billing and customer care systems.
"The combination of Sonus Networks and Atreus Systems provides the next step in creating a simple and integrated IP communications environment to manage next-generation communications services for consumers around the globe," stated Sonus CEO Hassan Ahmed. "The key to advancing complete IP networks for voice, data and multimedia services is to provide solutions that increase functionality and ease of use, allowing dependable and innovative environments that make IP services a reality. Our five-year relationship with Atreus convinced us that its technology will help accelerate the industry's growth and complement our access solution portfolio."
A Sonus spokesperson said Ms. Baptiste would continue as head of Atreus while the two companies are being integrated, after which she will take a "key role" within Sonus to focus on growing the company's access business.
"Out of the 70 employees at Atreus, the sales, development and engineering teams are all joining Sonus," the spokesperson's e-mail read.
"Sonus will integrate Atreus's technology and services into Sonus's existing business. As part of the integration, we are reviewing all aspects of the Atreus business and currently can't share further plans."
The spokesperson also noted that Atreus's Ottawa office would become Sonus's Canadian headquarters.
