Canada's small business community is urging the Harper government to recognize the role of small business in the economy in its first budget.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is calling on Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to use his first budget to improve the economic conditions for entrepreneurs and address barriers to prosperity and quality of life for Canadians in the future.

"We believe that focusing on small business issues is an excellent starting off point for the new parliament to work together," CFIB executive vice president Garth Whyte said in a statement.

"Small- and medium-sized business has been a huge driving force behind Canada's impressive economic growth and job creation performance. CFIB believes that the government should do all it can to create an environment that helps to build on that record by promoting and supporting entrepreneurship."

The CFIB's pre-budget submission urged the government to act by:

  • lowering the overall tax burden through a multi-year tax and debt reduction plan

  • reducing government red tape and the regulatory burden affecting business

  • addressing challenges with entrepreneurial succession

"In a global economy, companies are only as competitive as their government policies allow them to be. A smaller, more nimble government, committed to removing the obstacles to prosperity and encouraging entrepreneurship will, in the end, improve the quality of life for all Canadians, now and in the future," Mr. Whyte concluded.
