The University of Ottawa and Carleton University are receiving more than $1.3 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation as part of an investment supporting 31 institutions across the country.

The foundation is investing a total of $22.5 million to support 157 researchers engaged in 134 projects.

Carleton is getting $356,785 for three projects, while the University of Ottawa is receiving $950,530 for six projects. Both universities are getting the money through the Leaders Opportunity Fund.

The investment is being doled out to a wide variety of projects, ranging from environmental research, to health, information and communication technology research, with nine provinces benefiting from the funds.

"Access to modern, cutting-edge equipment and facilities is imperative to research in the 21st century," said CFI chief executive Dr. Eliot Phillipson in a statement. "Over the past decade, the CFI has provided thousands of world-class researchers with the tools they need to do their work. Without the infrastructure, they simply wouldn't be in Canada."
