The people speak in Kanata

Twenty-four businesses and individuals were honoured Wednesday evening at the Brookstreet hotel for the 2008 edition of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce's People's Choice Business Awards.

More than 300 attended the event, hosted by CFRA radio personality and financial advisor Walter Traversy.

The winners were selected from more than 200 area businesses, based on votes from 4,300 residents of Goulbourn, Kanata and West Carleton.

The winners were:

Kanata's Citizen of the Year: CFRA's Steve Madely.

Goulbourn's Citizen of the Year: John Brummell of the Stittsville News.

West Carleton's Citizen of the Year: Lee Cavanagh, the man who "makes the Carp Fair work."

Business of the year:

Kanata: The Spa Day Retreat

Goulbourn: Mahogany Salon and Spa

West Carleton: Footworks Dance Academy

New business of the year:

Kanata: Blue Bamboo Yoga

Goulbourn: Pocopazzo Restaurant

West Carleton: La Diva Cookies & Sweets

Best family owned & operated business of the year:

Kanata: Forte Chocolate, Gelato, Coffee

Goulbourn: Dragon's Lair Beads

West Carleton: Heart and Soul Cafe

Community support /non-profit organization of the year:

Kanata: Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre

Goulbourn: Friends of Hospice

West Carleton: Pinhey's Point Foundation

Tourism business of the year:

Kanata: Brookstreet

Goulbourn: Saunders Farm

West Carleton: Carp Farmers' Market

Retailer of the year:

Kanata: Trillium Floral Designs

Goulbourn: Wine Villa

West Carleton: Artistic Group Ottawa

Restaurant of the year:

Kanata: The Glen Scottish Restaurant

Goulbourn: Napoli's Café & Grill

West Carleton: The Cheshire Cat
