Buses, trains and other transit vehicles purchased with provincial funding must now contain at least 25 per cent Canadian content, Queen's Park announced Thursday.

The government says the new rules will support Ontario employment, promote economic development and safeguard an open bidding process.

A spokesperson for Canadian manufacturers praised the announcement.

"Canadian manufacturers and exporters who supply infrastructure projects need a globally-competitive business environment," said Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters president Jayson Myers in a statement. "That starts with policies that provide them with a level playing field. Ontario has taken a step in the right direction today."
