Who are Ottawa's young business stars of 2007?

They include seven company presidents and one director of fun. Their expertise spans technology to glass block windows. Their volunteer efforts vary from chairing major charity events to coaching little league baseball.

And they have one thing in common – they are 2007 recipients of the Ottawa Business Journal's Forty Under 40 Award.

For the tenth time, the OBJ has recognized 40 recipients for an award that recognizes business accomplishments, professional expertise and community involvement.

The judging panel included OBJ publisher Michael Curran and OBJ editor Leo Valiquette and three guest judges that are to be congratulated for their efforts: Stephen Daze, director of OCRI's Entrepreneurship Centre; Robin McIntyre, regional president for Rogers Cable, and Cellwand president Nick Quain.

Each judge individually assessed the nominations, which were graded using a 40-point scale – 20 points for business achievements, 10 points for expertise and 10 points for charitable work.

"The nominations are absolutely fascinating," says Mr. Curran, who has chaired the selection committee for seven years. "I spent about 12 hours this year reading the submissions. You get a very clear sense of the entrepreneurial spirit in the city. The level of ambition and expertise makes me feel optimistic about the city's future. This is an impressive group of people."

The 2007 Forty Under 40 recipients will be celebrated at an awards gala June 21 at the Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel. The event will raise money for cancer care priorities at the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Profiles of each recipient will be published in OBJ's June 18 issue.
