Ontario Power Generation has taken the first step toward construction of a new nuclear generating station at Darlington, east of Toronto.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission says it received the application Thursday.

The proposal will now undergo a mandatory environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

"Canadians expect a modern, 21st-century, world-class review of any new reactor and the CNSC will proceed in an open, transparent and efficient manner to deliver that," says commission president and CEO Linda Keen. "Canadians can be assured that any new nuclear power plant built in Canada will meet the highest standards for health, safety, security and environmental protection."

The new reactor is being proposed as part of the solution to Ontario's growing need for electricity.

The Durham region already produces 30 per cent of Ontario's power and local leaders are already on side supporting the proposal.

"Nuclear power, in tandem with more research and development of other forms of generation including renewable energy, is an important part of Ontario's supply mix plan," says Michael Angemeer, chairman of the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance. "The addition of future generation in Durham would be supported by the region's major transmission corridor, a skilled and knowledgeable workforce and strong community support."
