LRT maintenance yard recommended

The public working group tasked with deciding where Ottawa's north-south light rail maintenance yard should go has evaluated the suitability of each site and recommended Walkley Yard.

Out of a possible 100 per cent score, sources say, Walkley Yard (without a flyover bridge) scored 81.4 per cent after the working group's evaluation, blowing competing sites at Lester (42.1 per cent, Bowesville (53 per cent) and Bowesville to Armstrong (48.5 per cent) out of the water.

The result could allow the Ottawa Sports Park (OSP) to go forward, according to Larry Pegg of Ecoview, a local developer of 'sustainable' recreational facilities, and Osgoode Coun. Dough Thompson.

"This result is a great example of democracy and how important public input is," says Mr. Thompson.

"The public's hard work and commitment is another step forward for the Ottawa Sports Park and the City of Ottawa's sustainable agenda," he continues. "I look forward to working with my colleagues at the municipal, provincial and federal levels as well as the private sector to make this project happen."

Pegg says Ecoview plans to create 30 full size soccer fields on the Bowesville site, to create the Ottawa Sports Park.
